No talk of caretaker govt. at SLFP CC, coalition govt. continues

17 Oct 2018

The central committee (CC) of the Sri Lanka Freedom party (SLFP) that met last night under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at his official residence in Colombo has not discussed the formation of any caretaker government. Prior to the CC meeting, there was speculation that the recently defected SLFP Group of 15 would call on the party to move out of the coalition government and push for the formation of a caretaker government with the'joint opposition.' However, the Group of 15 had refrained from attending the CC meeting and has instead sent a letter requesting the party to consider moving out of the coalition government. Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said the CC did not discuss the letter any further than announcing its contents at the meeting. The main focus, he said was on the party reforms. According to Amaraweera, party reforms are on going.
