No thermal plants generating power for last 7 days: Minister

07 Jun 2022

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera says that the country’s power demand has currently been met through hydro power, coal and other renewable energy generation plants and not through thermal power plants. The Minister told parliament that the thermal power plants have not been in operation for the past seven days since the rains received by the country had increased the hydro power generation capacity. He further noted that the Power and Energy Ministry is working on a plan to ensure a continuous power supply to the country and that the daily power cuts have now been reduced to two and a half hours. “We have saved Rs. 400 million by the CPC that would have been used for diesel for power plants,” Wijesekera said.
