No vaccine mix-and-match research in Sri Lanka

02 May 2021

Contrary to media reports published last week, The Morning learnt yesterday (2) that Sri Lanka is not conducting experimentation on mixing and matching Covid-19 vaccines, and that such tests are being carried out only in foreign countries. Speaking to The Morning on Saturday (1), Ministry of Health Epidemiology Unit Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera refuted reports of vaccine mix-and-match experimentation being conducted in Sri Lanka. “Sri Lanka is not conducting any experimentation with regards to vaccine mixing and matching,” he noted. Several news reports last week stated that Sri Lanka has begun research to determine whether vaccines can be mixed and matched. The reports were based on a statement made by Dr. Sudath Samaraweera at a press conference held on Thursday (29). In the press conference, Dr. Samaraweera had said that experiments are underway to determine whether an individual who has received the first dose of one vaccine could be administered a different vaccine for their second dose. “There are ongoing experiments to determine whether vaccines can be mixed and matched. However, they are still at the experimental stage, and if they prove to be effective, Sri Lanka could take steps to procure the kinds of vaccines that can be administered as a second dose.” He said this in response to inquiries made about the plan to administer the second dose to those who have received the first dose, in light of delays in receiving stocks of the Oxford Astra-Zeneca Covishield vaccine from the Serum Institute of India. When inquired about the matter on Saturday, Dr. Samaraweera said he had been referring to experimentation being carried out in other countries when addressing the media on Thursday. “When I said experiments are ongoing about vaccine mixing and matching, I was referring to experiments being carried out overseas.” Sri Lanka is currently short of about 600,000 Covishield doses to administer the second dose to the 925,242 individuals who received the first dose. A total of 85,653 frontline workers had received their second dose of Covishield by Saturday (1) and about 254,000 doses of Covishield remain available in the country for the administration of the second dose.
