Non-medical health sector strikes

26 Jan 2022

  • Nurses, paramedics, PHIs, lab techs demand solution to salary anomalies
BY Buddhika Samaraweera  The non-medical health sector trade unions (TUs), including those of the nursing and paramedical services, public health inspectors (PHIs), and medical laboratory technologists, launched a 24 hour-long strike in the Western Province (WP) from 7 a.m. yesterday (26) to 7 a.m. today (27) demanding that the Government provide speedy solutions to their issues including salary anomalies. The said strike action is the ninth and last in a series of strikes at the provincial level which had been organised by non-medical health sector TUs to protest against the Government’s failure to address their issues including salary anomalies. However, the TUs have warned that if their demands are not resolved within another 10 days, a continuous strike will be launched in all hospitals islandwide. Speaking to The Morning yesterday, College of Medical Laboratory Science President Ravi Kumudesh said that although their previous strikes were not launched at specialised hospitals such as the Castle Street Teaching Hospital for Women, the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, the National Cancer Institute/Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama, and hospitals treating Covid-19 patients, the strike launched yesterday was active in such hospitals as well. “As TUs, we have explained our problems at length in writing to all the authorities, including President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, but it is very clear that the President and the Government obtain information about our problems only through intelligence reports. Therefore, the strike action was launched at each and every hospital in protest of the Government’s continuous ignorance,” he claimed. Meanwhile, warning that they would launch a continuous strike action at hospitals across the country if the Government does not take action to resolve their issues within 10 days, Kumudesh said that it would also be implemented in specialised hospitals and treatment centres. “We will not allow patients to die due to the lack of treatment, but we will enforce the strike in all hospitals as much as possible. It is clear to us from the recent teachers’ and principals’ strike that only by launching strikes and protests can the TUs get a solution. The Government, which is creating the environment for such a serious action, should be held responsible for all the inconveniences that will be caused to the people,” he added. Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Sanjeewa Munasinghe was not available for comment. Earlier, non-medical TUs launched a number of token strike actions islandwide demanding that solutions be given to the issues they face. In addition to the strikes, several protests were also held. They had also organised a motorcade in Colombo on 30 November 2021 demanding that the Government provide immediate solutions to their issues including salary and promotion-related issues.
