Norochcholai Plant's Generator 03 shut down for maintenance

28 May 2021

Generator 03 at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant was shut down temporarily on Friday (28). Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board Vijitha Herath speaking to media said the generator was shut down for a planned maintenance operation. “Sri Lanka received rainfall that could generate around 200 GW of electricity recently,” he said adding that the cost to generate an electricity unit will be only Rs. 02/- via hydro-power, while it would cost Rs. 30/- to generate via diesel-power. In addition, the electricity demand had dropped by 30% due to the travel restrictions imposed in Sri Lanka, he added. The shut down of Generator 03 will not cause an issue as electricity can be generated using hydro-power, said Vijitha Herath. At the same time, the Ceylon Electricity Board recently requested consumers to use the CEB self-care facilities to file any complaint given the limited number of agents available at CEB call centers due to the present COVID-19 situation.
