Bureaucratic hurdles for open account imports have caused delays in the repairs of Generation Unit 2 of the controversial Norochcholai Coal Power Plant, The Sunday Morning learns.
A senior official at the Ministry of Power and Energy told The Sunday Morning on terms of anonymity that the repair schedule of Generation Unit 2 (one of three coal-fired generation units) at Norochcholai Power Plant had been delayed due to difficulties in clearing several essential spare parts which had been imported through the open account payment option.
Unit 2 entered the planned maintenance phase on 15 June and was expected to be completed by the first week of September. However, sources indicate that delays due to the unavailability of spares may push completion of maintenance to the first week of October.
When contacted, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Spokesperson Andrew Nawamani acknowledged that the scheduled maintenance cycle was delayed due to a spare parts issue, but would not comment any further.
Norochcholai Power Plant produces approximately 800-900 MW of electricity when all three generation units are fully operational.
