NP Governor backs calls to demilitarise North

Northern Province Governor Suren Raghavan has backed calls to demilitarise the North.

The Governor told The Sunday Morning that there needs to be a political decision taken on the demilitarisation issue.

He said that questions have been raised with regard to the number of soldiers stationed in the North in a post-war environment. The Governor also said that he agreed with calls to demilitarise the North but that the decision should be taken by the leadership in Colombo.

He also insisted that there was no security threat in the North, particularly from the “Aava” armed group.

The Governor added that while a group of youth had been engaged in criminal activity under the name “Aava”, that group had now been disarmed.
