President Ranil Wickremesinghe stated he “regrets” the decision taken by the National People’s Power (NPP) to not attend the discussions on establishing an all-party Government, a day after NPP Leader MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake wrote to him stating that the time window for forming an all-party Government had now come to an end.
In his letter addressed to Dissanayake, the President said he is hopeful that the NPP would join the efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis situation for the sake of the country, despite not attending the first meeting earlier this week.
This letter was in response to a letter sent to the President by Dissanayake stating that the ideal opportunity for the formation of an all-party Government with the participation of all parties and with a clear timeframe and specific objectives was in the period leading up to the resignation of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, from 9 July onwards.
Meanwhile, President Wickremesinghe has stated that he aims to prepare a governance structure with fair representation for each political party.
His remarks came during a discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat on Wednesday (10) evening with several parties regarding the formation of an all-party Government.
The President has further mentioned that his main objective is to establish the National Assembly, adding that the representation of all parties and the full representation of other parties and groups in the alliance are necessary for this purpose.
President Wickremesinghe also requested respective parties to hold discussions and inform him whether they would represent the committee-based system or join the all-party Government.
