“Oak trees are also shown as deforestation cases in SL,” Minister responds to altered pictures on social media

24 Mar 2021

Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera commented on false reports circulating on social media with regard to incidents of deforestation and said that some people have posted pictures of ‘Oak Trees’ as well to show deforestation cases in Sri Lanka. He said that some well-known journalists have even included photos of deforestation and tree felling in foreign countries on Facebook stating that these incidents have taken place in Sri Lanka. “Even the Oak trees that do not grow in our country are photographed as deforestation in Sinharaja. Environmental damage in the Amazon rainforest has also been described as environmental damage in Sinharaja," he said at a press conference held yesterday (23). The Minister requested that such activities be avoided and that real environmental damage be highlighted. However, legal action has already been taken against a number of people who are harming the environment in this country, the minister said. He said that he had instructed the Central Environmental Authority to submit a detailed report in this regard.
