Objections over Wigi’s comments in the House

21 Aug 2020

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Manusha Nanayakkara today (21) requested the Speaker of Parliament to direct the removal of certain statements made yesterday by MP C.V. Wigneswaran in the House from the Parliament Hansard. Nanayakkara raised objections to the comments made by Wigneswaran on the right to self determination of Tamil people in the North and East as well as promoting the Tamil homeland concept in the House. According to Nanayakkara, it was not appropriate to promote such sentiments in Parliament at a time when everyone in the country was trying to shed differences and come together as one nation. He further stated that Wigneswaran’s statement was a violation of the oath taken by all parliamentarians at the inaugural session of the House where it was pledged that a division of the country and communities will not be promoted. Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena responded saying he will look into the matter and take appropriate action.
