October export earnings go beyond $ 1 b

Sri Lanka has achieved a merchandise export revenue of $ 1.16 billion in the month October this year, reaching beyond the swaying margin of $ 1 billion for the last few months. This is an increase of 35.9% in October 2021 in comparison to that of October 2020, according to data released by the Sri Lanka Customs. Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) Chairman Suresh D. de Mel said: “This is the highest-ever merchandise export figure in any October in our (EDB) history. Opening up for western markets together with the sustained production in Sri Lanka can be attributed to this increase. I commend our (Sri Lankan) exporters for this outstanding performance during these difficult times.” Major export earnings in October 2021 were made from the apparel and textile, rubber and rubber-finished products, and kernel products, fibre products, and shell products under the category of coconut-based products. When it comes to export earnings from apparel and textile, it has increased by 42.8 % Year-on-Year (YoY) to $ 509 million in October 2021 while export earnings from rubber and rubber-finished products increased by 14.5 % YoY to $ 91.9 million. Under coconut products, export earnings from desiccated coconut, coconut milk powder, coconut cream and liquid coconut milk categorised under the coconut kernel products increased by 73.9%, 13.2%, 54.2%, and 23% YoY, respectively, in October 2021. However, earnings from export of coconut oil decreased by 13.9% during the last month. Meanwhile, export revenue from tea has been faced with a decrease of 2.4% in comparison to the earnings of October 2020.
