OIC member states write to President urging burial of Muslim Covid-19 victims

The Ambassadors and High Commissioners in Sri Lanka holding membership of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have urged president Gotabaya Rajapaksa to permit the burial of Muslim Covid-19 victims. In a letter addressed to Rajapaksa, the OIC member states said, "Scientist public health functionaries and medical practitioners across countries affirm that the WHO guidelines carefully and adequately provides for individuals and communities to make a choice in respect of burial or cremation, in keeping with the person’s faith." Pointing out that all three of the Muslim Covid-19 diseased have been cremated,  the member states said there was no conclusive evidence anywhere that suggests the possibility of spread of the virus through burial. "We are afraid, the issue of cremation of dead bodies of Muslims in Sri Lanka could cause grievance to the Muslims of Sri Lanka and the world over." "Our outreach is intended only to strengthen the bonds and fraternity with Sri Lanka and all women and men in the society irrespective of any distinction or faith, and should not be construed as interference in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka, by any measure," the OIC member states added. The OIC member states requested the President to addressed the matter urgently through frank consultation with the Muslims of Sri Lanka. Signatories of the letter are High Commissioner of the Republic of Maldives, High commissioner of Malaysia, Chargé d'affaires of the Islamic republic of Iran, Ambassador of the Islamic republic of Afghanistan, Ambassador of the republic of Turkey,  Chargé d'affaires  a.i. of the state of Libya, Chargé d'affaires of the republic of Iraq,  Chargé d'affaires of the Islamic republic of Iran, Ambassador of the sultanate of Oman, Ambassador of the state of palatine, Ambassador of the state of Kuwait, high commissioner of the people's republic of Bangladesh, Ambassador of the Arab republic of Egypt, Ambassador of he United Arab Emirates, Ambassador of the Royal kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
