Oil bunkering industry to BIA’s rescue

  • To provide fuel for Taisei Corp. for BIA’s 2nd terminal construction; 13,000 litres needed daily
Sri Lanka’s oil bunkering industry representatives have agreed to provide the fuel needed for the Taisei Corporation for their construction needs pertaining to the second terminal at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake.  In a statement issued in this regard yesterday (30 June), the Ports, Shipping, and Aviation Ministry said that the Taisei Corporation had conveyed to the Ports, Shipping, and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva that they need about 13, 000 litres of fuel per day for the construction efforts.  Thus, de Silva had inquired from representatives of the oil bunkering industry as to whether they could meet these requirements, after which they had agreed to do so, on Wednesday (29 June).  The statement further said that de Silva had stated that the construction of BIA’s second terminal had begun eight years ago but had faced multiple delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and now, the fuel shortages, a fact which had also been recently discussed by de Silva and the Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akira Sugiyama.  Meanwhile, the Cabinet of Ministers, this week, granted approval to fuel bunkers registered with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority to import and sell the Jet A-1 aviation fuel necessary for aviation services, as the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has failed to supply the daily aviation fuel requirement for aircraft arriving in and departing from Sri Lanka – approximately 1.2 million litres per day. This was done with the decision to allow private players to import fuel to Sri Lanka, thereby breaking the CPC-Lanka Indian Oil Corporation duopoly.  Commenting on this at a discussion with industry experts this week, de Silva had requested the Civil Aviation Authority, the Customs, and the airlines to support these efforts taken by the fuel bunkers.
