An dark patch has reportedly been visible in the vicinity of the distressed MV X-Press Pearl, Navy Media Spokesman Captain Indika De Silva told The Morning today (10).
However, the Spokesman said that teams from the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) have been deployed to determine if it is an oil leak from the vessel itself. Additionally, De Silva stated that even though foreign media have reported that there had been a large oil spill due to the vessel, he dismissed the same as untrue. The current dark patch is being investigated to ascertain whether it was from the vessel. Meanwhile, the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) stated that it is prepared to face any possible oil spill from the sinking X-Press Pearl container ship off the coast of Sri Lanka. MEPA Chairperson Darshani Lahandapura said that Oil Containment Booms will be positioned around the vessel and chemical dispersants will also be dropped from the air in order to prevent leaking oil, if any, from spreading.Dark patch visible in vicinity of X-Press Pearl, preliminary steps taken: Navy Spokesman
