On The Day - 30 September: Sri Lanka share ICC Champions Trophy with India

1869 - Birth of the first man to be no-balled in a Test for throwing - Australian Ernie Jones who was a fearsome fast-bowler who took 64 wickets in his 19 Tests and took England apart at Lord’s in 1899. Jones was first called for throwing against England in Melbourne in 1897-98. Jones died in Adelaide in November 1943

1939 - In the first televised college football game, Fordham beats Waynesburg, 34-7 at Randalls Island, New York, U.S.A.

1947 - In first televised World Series Baseball game, NY Yankees beat Brooklyn Dodgers, 5-3 in Game 1 at Yankee Stadium. It also had the largest World Series crowd to date (73,365)

1952 - Birth of international umpire Darrell Hair, who was at the centre during the first forfeited Test in 2006 between Pakistan and England. He also no-balled Muttiah Muralitharan during the second Test in Melbourne in 1995-96. Hair followed up by slating Murali’s action in his autobiography. He also called Grant Flower for throwing during a Test between Zimbabwe and New Zealand in Bulawayo in 2000-01. Hair was the neutral umpire during some of the defining moments of Test cricket in the 1990s: Brian Lara’s 375, Mike Atherton’s 185, and Courtney Walsh’s 500th Test wicket

1980 - Birth of Swiss tennis player Martina Hingis, five-time Grand Slam winner

1986 - Birth of New Zealand opening batsman Martin Guptill. In the 2015 World Cup, he made 237 against West Indies, the highest score in World Cups and the second-highest in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). He still holds New Zealand’s top three scores in ODIs

1988 - Soviet Union beats Yugoslavia 76-63 to win the men's basketball gold medal at the Seoul Olympics. US finished third and it was the final time US fielded a non-NBA team in the Olympics

1994 - Mark Taylor became the first person to bag a pair in his first Test as Captain

2002 - The Champions Trophy was shared between India and Sri Lanka after the Colombo final was washed out on two consecutive days. On both, Sri Lanka completed their innings before rain ended play. In the second match played on the reserve day, Sri Lanka totalled a fighting 222 on a spin-friendly R. Premadasa track yet rain stopped play with India having played only 8.4 overs
