1884 - The first double-century stand in Test cricket was completed, at the Oval. Billy Murdoch and H.J.H “Tup” Scott scored 207 for the third wicket, with Scott scoring his only Test century. Australia eventually made 551 but England held out for a draw

1909 - By adding 130 to his 136 in the first innings, Warren Bardsley became the first player to score a century in each innings of a Test. The draw at the Oval gave Australia the series 2-1. Bardsley, one of the great batsmen of his generation, had to wait 17 years, though, for his next hundred against England: 193 not out at Lord’s

1962 - Birth of cricket all-rounder Shaul Hameed Uvais Karnain. A right-arm medium-pace bowler and proficient batsman in the lower-order, Karnain showed signs of developing into a handy all-rounder at ODI level. Karnain made a stunning debut against New Zealand with the bat as he helped Arjuna Ranatunga rescue Sri Lanka from 69/5, scoring 28 valuable runs

1977 - English cricket legend Geoffrey Boycott making his 100th hundred to become the first ever to do so. In a perfect piece of stage management, he scored it on his home ground, Headingley, in a Test against Australia. Boycott went on to make 191

1984 - A British 1-2 in the 1,500 m at the Los Angeles Olympics with Sebastian Coe edging team-mate Steve Cram to become the only man to successfully defend his Olympic 1,500 m title

2002 - British Open Women’s Golf, Turnberry Ailsa Resort: Karrie Webb won by two strokes from fellow Australian Michelle Ellis and Paula Martí. It was the fifth different major for Webb, a career “Super Slam”

2005 - Shane Warne became the first bowler to take 600 Test wickets. And he did it at Old Trafford where he spawned his legend back in 1993. This time the victim was Marcus Trescothick

2005 - American Justin Gatlin became only the second athlete to take sprint double, winning 200 m in 20.04 seconds at the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland

2008 - Abhinav Bindra won men’s 10 m air rifle at the Beijing Olympics, the first-ever individual Olympic gold medal for India, and India’s first gold medal in any Olympic event since 1980
