1977 - Birth of the first black man to play cricket for South Africa. Makhaya Ntini made his ODI and Test debut in 1998. In 2003, he became the first South African to take ten wickets in a Test at Lord’s, and his 13/132 against West Indies in Trinidad in 2005 is the best match haul for a South African in Test

1980 - Pau Gasol, Spanish basketball player was born in Barcelona. He is a six-time NBA All-Star and a four-time entry in the All-NBA team selection. Gasol has won two NBA championships, both with the Los Angeles Lakers back-to-back in 2009 and 2010. He was the NBA Rookie of the year in 2002 with the Memphis Grizzlies, being the first non-American player to have won that award

1984 - The first twins to play in the same Test came from New Zealand. Rose and Liz Signal both made their debuts in the first Women’s Test against England at Headingley, which started on this day in 1984

2008 - Carnage in Karachi, Ajantha Mendis scythed through India to deny them the Asia Cup title, India’s second consecutive loss to Sri Lanka in the final

Raina lost his stumps trying to pull a length ball, and Mendis added Rohit Sharma, Irfan Pathan, and Ishant Sharma to his tally, finishing with 6/13 giving Sri Lanka their fourth Asia Cup win[/caption]

2008 - Rafael Nadal beats Roger Federer 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (8-10), 9-7 in men’s singles tennis to win his first Wimbledon title. With the score in the last at 5-2, Nadal had the opportunity to win the title on his next two serves. However, he double faulted, then netted a backhand, bringing the tiebreak back on serve. During the deciding set, Federer was two points away from claiming his sixth consecutive Wimbledon crown, but Nadal ultimately held serve and eventually broke Federer’s serve in the 15th game of the set. Nadal then served out the match in the following game and won the final set 9-7

2019 - Rohit Sharma became the first batsman to score five hundreds in a World Cup, beating Kumar Sangakkara’s record of four in the 2015 tournament, when he made 103 against Sri Lanka in India’s final league-stage game
