On This Day - 6 September: Lasith Malinga takes 'four in four' in Pallekele

1880 - It was the first day of Test cricket in England and the fourth Test overall. England’s first century was scored by William Gilbert (WG) Grace. His 152 guided England to 410 runs for eight wickets. On the second day, Australia were bundled out cheaply and were asked to follow on. Billy Murdoch hit an unbeaten 153 for Australia but could only set England a target of 57. They lost five wickets in reaching it!

1968 - Birth of Pakistani opener, Saeed Anwar. His first Test ton (169) came against New Zealand in Wellington in 1993-94. He also hammered 176 against England at The Oval in 1996, as well as an unbeaten 188, his highest Test score, in Calcutta in 1998-99

1972 - Summer Olympics resumed in Germany after the ‘Munich Massacre’ killed 11 Israeli athletes by ‘Black September’ Palestinian terrorist organisation

1995 - Birth of the renowned Bangladeshi left-arm fast-bowler Mustafizur Rahman, who burst into the scene with 11 wickets in his first two One-Day Internationals (ODI) for Bangladesh, against India

2008 - Serena Williams wins her third US Open title beating Jelena Janković of Serbia 6-4, 7-5

2016 - Australia broke the record for the highest total in T20 International when they score 263 against Sri Lanka in Pallekelle. Glenn Maxwell made 145 not out off 65 balls, with 110 of those runs coming from boundaries and sixes. Aussies won the match by 85 runs

2018 - World Surf League is announced to be held from 2019. There would be equal prize money for men and women across elite tour events. It was the first US-based global sports league and one of the first in the world to provide gender pay parity

2019 - Sri Lankan cricket fast-bowler Lasith Malinga takes four wickets in four balls and finishes with 5/6 as New Zealand were cleaned up for 88 in a 37-run defeat in the third T-20I in Pallekele
