On This Day - 8 September: At SSC, Mohommad Ashraful becomes the youngest to make Test century

08 Sep 2021

1947 - Birth of Kenyan 3,000 m steeplechase runner Amos Biwott. Biwott had only three steeplechase races before the Olympics and his technique was unorthodox. Yet he won the gold medal in the 1968 Summer Olympics. Instead of placing one foot on the barrier and springing off, he cleared the obstacle in one leap, and in this way reduced the clearance time by half. He was the only runner to finish with completely dry feet in both the Olympic qualifying heat and the final, which he won by 0.6 seconds ahead the second-place winner Benjamin Kogo

1963 - Scottish driver Jim Clark wins the Italian Grand Prix at Monza to clinch his first F1 World Drivers’ Championship. It was Clark’s fifth Grand Prix win of the season

1968 - Arthur Ashe won first ‘open era’ US title after beating Dutchman Tom Okker 14-12, 5-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3

1979 - Tracy Austin became the youngest US champion at 16 years and nine months when she beat Chris Evert 6-4, 6-3 in straight sets

1990 - Birth of English wicket-keeper Jos Butler. He announced himself with a ten-ball 32 in a T20I against South Africa in 2012, and inside four years, he had scored three of England’s fastest ODI hundreds, including one in 46 balls against Pakistan in Dubai in 2015. In the 2016 World T20, he made 191 runs from six innings at a strike rate of 159.16. In an ODI series against Australia in 2018, he made scores of 91 not out, 54 not out and 110 not out - the century taking England from 114 for 8 to a dramatic victory in a match in which no other England player crossed 20

1990 - Gabriela Sabatini becomes only Argentine woman to win a grand slam singles event, beating Steffi Graf 6-2, 7-6 in the US Open tennis women’s singles final

2001 - Mohommad Ashraful of Bangladesh became the youngest man ever to make a Test century. He made 114 in Bangladesh second innings against Sri Lanka. Though this did not have much of an impact on the result - trailing by 465 runs on first innings, Bangladesh were eventually bowled out for 328. However, he broke the long-standing record for the youngest centurion, set by Mushtaq Mohammad when he made 101 for Pakistan against India in 1960-61 (17 years, 82 days)
