Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana stated today (28) that the Gampola Police has arrested a 19 year old suspect for sharing fake news on social media platforms.
The suspect is a resident of Kahatapitiya in Gampola
The arrest was carried out after intelligence officers had given tip-offs to the Gampola Police.
DIG Rohana also said that the suspect had spread fake news with the objective of creating racial disharmony. The mobile phone used by the arrestee has been taken into custody by the investigating officers attached to the Gampola Police.
The suspect has committed an offence under Section 120 of the Penal Code, Section 98 of Police Ordinance and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act, as stated by DIG Rohana.
