Onion shortage looms large

06 May 2020

Sri Lanka could experience a big onion shortage in the coming months, The Morning learnt. All Island Farmers Federation (AIFF) National Co-ordinator Namal Karunaratne told The Morning that a shortage had been brewing in the past few years. “There is severe scarcity in big onion seeds. This is one of the main reasons,” Karunaratne said. He said that seed supplies dropped due to onion farmers leaving the trade. “Onion farmers were victimised due to high onion prices in addition to other factors,” he said, adding that the importation of big onion seeds was affected by Covid-19 containment measures as well. “With imports being stopped, the seed supply too was hindered,” Karunaratne said.
