  • Internationally recognised certificate for fully vaccinated Sri Lankans

By Buddhika Samaraweera   A system launched by the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) to facilitate the public to register online for the Covid-19 vaccine will be operational from today (12), according to ICTA. When contacted by The Morning, project head and ICTA Chief Technology Officer Hiranya Samarasekara said that it would initially be available only in the Western Province. “Accordingly, residents of Colombo, Kalutara, and Gampaha Districts in the Western Province could reserve a date, time, and place to receive the Covid-19 vaccine through this system,” he said. He said that steps would be taken to introduce this system to other provinces as well, depending on its success in the Western Province. The project is being implemented jointly by the Ministry of Health and the ICTA. The Ministry of Health and the ICTA initially launched this project on 19 May 2021, and Rajapaksa, who participated in the project launch, said that it was hoped that the vaccination programme will be carried out systematically and expeditiously throughout the island through this system. In addition, the system also facilitates the acquisition of an internationally recognised certificate for those who have received both doses of Covid-19 vaccine. Elaborating on this Samarasekara said: “Information obtained from the public at the Covid-19 vaccination centres are referred to an information system maintained by the Ministry of Health. Thereafter, those who have received both doses of the vaccine are able to download a certificate through this system. “This will make it easier to find the person's name, age, National Identity Card (NIC) number, date of vaccination, type of vaccine and batch number. The uniqueness of this is that the relevant accuracy can be verified from anywhere in the world through the QR Code.” Meanwhile, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs and State Minister of Digital Technology and Enterprise Development Namal Rajapaksa handed over the first such certificate to Sri Lanka Gymnastics Association Secretary Kapila Jeewantha on behalf of the Sri Lankan team, to participate in the Tokyo Olympics.
