The reports that over 200 acres of land have been deforested and destroyed in Anawilundawa, Wanathawilluwa are incorrect and only 1.65 acres have been affected by deforestation, Minister of Wildlife & Forest Conservation C. B. Rathnayake stated in Parliament today (9).
“The forest has not been cleared stealthily over a period of two days but has been destroyed within a much shorter period of time. The accused has already been arrested and is awaiting trial. A committee has already been appointed to discuss the official report for the incident and it will be presented to the Parliament in due course,” he further said.
The Department of Wildlife Conservation and Sri Lanka Police have been dispatched to analyze the damage and investigations are currently ongoing.
