Noting that only about five million people in Sri Lanka have so far obtained the booster third dose of the US-Germany-manufactured Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Ramesh Pathirana urged the public who are eligible for the booster third dose, yesterday (19), to obtain it for their own protection.
“Only about five million of the eligible population have obtained the booster third dose so far. The Government has tried its best to provide the booster third dose for extra protection to the population. Please consider this as an important task and obtain the booster third dose for the protection of you and your loved ones,” Dr. Pathirana said while addressing the cabinet decisions press briefing held yesterday.
The Presidential Secretariat’s Vaccination Dashboard shows that whilst 85% of the eligible population (over 16 years of age) are fully vaccinated (with two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine), only 4,754,141 booster third doses have been administered as of yesterday.
Foreign media reports show that the US reported a new record for the highest number of daily new Covid-19 cases last month, with the Omicron variant being responsible for 59% of new infections in the country. Reportedly, an estimated 62% of the US population is fully vaccinated and boosted. Similarly, the number of daily new Covid-19 cases reached a record high in the UK on 30 December 2021, two days after the World Health Organisation warned that the Omicron strain could lead to overwhelmed healthcare systems, even though early studies suggest that it sparks milder disease.
Speaking to The Sunday Morning last week, University of Sri Jayewardenepura Allergy, Immunology, and Cell Biology Unit Director Dr. Chandima Jeewandara warned that “Sri Lanka is yet to hit the peak of Omicron cases”. Similarly, National Institute of Infectious Diseases Hospital Consultant Physician, Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama said that there is a risk of another wave of Covid-19 occurring in the country due to the spread of the new Omicron variant, and thus, recommended that those eligible take the booster third dose as soon as possible.
The University of Sri Jayewardenepura said last week that test samples obtained over the final week of December 2021 and the first week of January 2022 show that 160 new cases of the Omicron variant were discovered from Sri Lanka.
