Opposition disagrees with Govt. inviting Myanmar to BIMSTEC

12 Mar 2021

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa says it is problematic to invite the Myanmar Foreign Minister to the BIMSTEC Cabinet meeting in Sri Lanka. He pointed out that this confirms that the current Myanmar Government has been accepted by the Sri Lankan Government. The Opposition Leader expressed these views at a media briefing held in Colombo. "A so-called government has been formed in Myanmar today through militarization and by destroying democracy. The Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, in spite of the militarization and dictatorial frenzy that took place in Myanmar, invites the Minister of Foreign Affairs who was appointed by the military government to participate in the BIMSTEC Summit. I think the government has committed a serious mistake due to lack of knowledge about international relations," he said. However, the Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement regarding the invitation. The 17th BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting to be held in conjunction with the BIMSTEC Summit is scheduled to be held in Colombo on April 01. The Government of Myanmar has also been invited to attend, as all member countries are invited to attend. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that it only invited all member countries to participate in the discussions aimed at concluding the paperwork on the BIMSTEC Summit.
