Opposition MPs meet Catholic Bishops on Easter justice

27 Apr 2021

A special discussion between the Opposition MPs and Catholic Bishops took place yesterday (26) on the subject of the Easter Sunday investigations. This meeting comes after Chief Organiser of the Opposition Lakshman Kiriella requested Bishop’s Conference of Sri Lanka Chairman Rt. Rev. Dr. Winston Fernando to allow some key Opposition leaders to present facts related to the attacks and the subsequent responses of the present Government. In Kiriella’s request letter to Rt. Rev. Dr. Fernando, he stated that the truth behind the Easter Sunday attacks continues to be withheld from the public, and instead of serving justice to the victims, the Government has taken steps to take revenge on members of the Opposition and activists who are clamouring for the truth. He further elaborated that while more than 37,000 pages of evidence and testimonies from witnesses have been recorded in a report that spans eight volumes, only one of these volumes has been tabled in Parliament. Kiriella also highlights that some key pieces of evidence have not been made public. These include the evidence provided by the wife of the terrorist who detonated an explosive at the Tropical Inn in Dehiwala and the evidence provided by the wife of the Negombo St. Sebastian Church bomber. He goes on to mention that the present Prime Minister and some present ministers have admitted that before 2015, Zahran Hasheem, who was paid a salary by the Government at the time, and the Thowheed Jamath had close relationships with intelligence services in the country. Kiriella further mentions that the call of the Opposition Leadership is to resolve this issue and clear up this mystery on behalf of every citizen’s right to know the truth. Chief Organiser of the Opposition Kiriella and MPs Patali Champika Ranawaka, Dr. Harsha de Silva, Eran Wickramaratne, Manusha Nanayakkara, and Nalin Bandara were present at yesterday’s meeting with the Catholic Fathers.
