By Pamodi Waravita Consensus was reached on four key issues that need to be addressed by the Parliamentary Opposition, at a conference held with the participation of nearly all major parties in the Opposition on Saturday (17).  The four core issues were: The abolishment of the 20th Amendment; the need for economic revival; the commitment to human rights; and the protection of the independence of the justice system.  The meeting was convened by the National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) and chaired by former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and Samagi Jana Balawegeya (SJB) and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa. According to Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) Leader Mano Ganesan, the key issues were agreed upon by the attendees, including Premadasa, United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardane, “43 Brigade” Movement Leader Patali Champika Ranawaka, and Samagi Govi Peramuna Convenor Hemakumara Nanayakkara. Notably, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) was absent from the conference. Meanwhile, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Spokesperson and MP M.A. Sumanthiran PC, who had attended the meeting on behalf of the TNA, had urged that the Tamil national question be included among the key issues. Ganeshan had requested that national unity of all ethnic groups be addressed as well. Speaking to the media after the meeting, SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara said that the Opposition had agreed that it must be united in its stance against the breakdown of democracy, the economy, and the justice system. “Committees were appointed to address these issues and work against oppression by the Government,” said Madduma Bandara. SJB MP Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said that the meeting was the beginning of a united Opposition. “We are fearful for the future of this country. In the face of this oppression, we must show the strength of the public,” said NMSJ Chairman and former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya at the conference. Premadasa called for the defeat of the “anti-democratic trends” practiced by the Government.  The NMJS hosted the meeting on 17 Saturday, which was attended by representatives of the country's main opposition parties, including the SJB, the UNP, the TPA, the TNA, and the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC). However, the JVP was notably not in attendance at this meeting.
