The background

On 16th March 1970, The Oval cricket ground in London, England is seen being ringed with barbed wire, in an attempt to prevent vandalism by anti-apartheid demonstrators during a proposed South African cricket team’s tour in England. Six days later, on 22 March 1970, the tour was cancelled by the Cricket Council of England. South Africa were scheduled to play Surrey in the Oval in July before their fifth Test also fixed for the same venue from 13 August 1970.

What the photo reveals

The South African national cricket team was meant to tour England over the ’70 English summer and it was cancelled following the Stop the Seventy Tour protests from the anti-apartheid movement. The tour had to be subsequently replaced by one from a Rest of the World team. The South Africa squad picked for the tour had included big names such as Eddie Barlow, Barry Richards, Graeme Pollock, Ali Bacher, Lee Irvine, John Traicos, Peter Pollock, and Mike Procter.

Analysis

The iconic Oval cricket ground pavilion is seen through barbed wire as some persons laying the turf and rolling it. The barbed wire surrounds them. Barbed wire do always indicate tension, risk of being attacked, dismissing of the entrants, conflict, and war. The pitch is being made, play is to happen, the place is the famous Oval, yet there is some problem, a security problem, it seems. A photo is showing sports, expectation mingled with insecurity, danger, and politics.

An afterword

Six days after this photo was taken, on 22 March 1970, the proposed South Africa tour was cancelled by the Cricket Council of England. The move had followed strong pressure from the British Home Secretary James Callaghan. South Africa’s Minister of Sport Frank Waring was furious at the announcement. “It amounts to bowing down to irresponsible elements that manifest a total disregard for sport and the rights of others,” he had announced.
