Over 100 teachers’ protests islandwide

09 Nov 2021

BY Buddhika Samaraweera More than 100 protests organised by the Teachers’ and Principals’ Trade Union Alliance (TPTUA) were held in front of zonal education offices across the country yesterday (9), demanding an immediate solution to the teacher-principal salary anomaly issue. The TPTUA had also declared yesterday as a day of national protests. The main protest, which was attended by nearly 2,000, was held near the Lipton Circus Roundabout in Colombo. It was attended by teachers’ and principals’ trade union leaders including Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin and Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union (CTSU) General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe.  In addition to the teachers’ and principals’ trade unions, several other trade unions in other sectors had also joined the said series of protests. The teachers and principals had joined the protests after school hours, while other trade union members had joined it during their lunch hour.  Speaking during the protest, Stalin said that if the Government does not intervene to resolve the teacher-principal salary anomaly issue even after the series of protests held yesterday, a massive protest will be held in Colombo on 12 November, when the budget proposal for the financial year of 2022 will be presented to the Parliament.  “It has been more than 100 days since trade union actions were launched by us demanding a solution to the salary anomaly issue, but so far the Government has not been able to provide us with a solution. Teachers and principals have had to get onto the streets and protest in this manner, entirely due to the Government’s failure. However, we are not prepared to end this struggle until an acceptable solution is given to this issue,” he added. Nearly 30 teachers’ and principals’ trade unions have embarked on a number of trade union actions, including withdrawal from all physical and online teaching activities and examination-related duties, demanding a solution to the teacher-principal salary anomaly issue since 12 July 2021. However, they have now relaxed some of these trade union actions including by returning to physical teaching in schools under a work-to-rule campaign. They are further engaged in the trade union action in which they have withdrawn from all online teaching activities and the trade unions recently said that they would not resume online teaching activities unless they are provided with the necessary facilities such as tablets, laptops, and data packages.
