Over 10,000 persons affected due to adverse weather

By Sarah Hannan The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) situation report, updated as of 6 September, noted that the adverse weather conditions developed over the past week has affected 11,264 persons from 2,716 families in 11 districts, recording one death due to lightning in Hingurakgoda. The Galle District recorded the highest number of affected persons at 7,166 from 1,671 families due to heavy rains experienced in two days. Heavy winds and rains had partially damaged 613 houses, and fully damaged 10 houses and 12 commercial properties. Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology forecasts showers at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and North Western Provinces and in the Galle and Matara Districts with fairly heavy falls above 50 mm predicted at some places. Showers or thunderstorms would occur at several places in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa Districts after 2 p.m. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times across the island, particularly in the Northern, North Central, and North Western Provinces and in the Trincomalee, Hambantota, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya Districts. The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimise the damages caused by lightning activity and localised strong winds during thunderstorms.
