An estimated 10,000-12,000 foreign tourists are still remaining in the country, The Morning learnt.
Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ravinatha Aryasinha told The Morning that one-third of the foreigners who were in Sri Lanka when the lockdown and curfews were imposed at the end of last month are still in the island.
“Of the 30,000-odd foreigners who were in Sri Lanka on 19 March, around one-third still remain,” he said.
These foreigners included nationals from the US, UK, France, Germany, Australia, and Russia.
Aryasinha said that while the Government would not be providing any residence or long-term visa facilities, measures were being taken to ensure that they were able to return back to their home countries.
“The Government is not providing any residence facilities, but our leaders have been very public in asking people to be supportive and helpful and the tourists also have been abiding by curfews and staying in the districts. We have also been able to facilitate travel to the airport very easily so that they could use their tickets as a curfew pass.”
