Over 20,000 unclaimed driving licences piled up in Colombo courts: SDIG

11 Feb 2021

Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon said that over 20,000 driving licences have been piled up in several courts in Colombo as the drivers have not come to claim them after paying fines for traffic offences. He said this during the Committee of Public Accounts (COPA) meeting held in parliament yesterday. The Senior DIG said the drivers tend to get a fake driving licence created instead of collecting the real one from a court after paying the fine. He said it was unfortunate that there was no tool or system to differentiate forged driving driving licences. "Though a chip has been inserted in the driving licence, it has not been used for any purpose," he said. At the COPA meeting yesterday, the Committee has recommended the Transport Ministry to expand and upgrade the National Council for Road Safety into a Commission.
