Over 40 arrested so far in connection with child sex trafficking ring

Sri Lanka Police have arrested 41 suspects in connection to the Mount Lavinia Child Sex Scandal on the charges of Child Sex Trafficking, Child Abuse, Statutory Rape as well aiding in the crimes. Police Headquarters in a statement said the 15-year-old victim was first raped by her father in 2018 and both parents are among the arrested suspects. Sri Lanka Police said it is conducting investigations on multiple avenues based on telecommunication analysis, internet searches, financial details as well as CCTV footage. Sri Lanka Police added that a request was made from the courts to ban several websites linked to the scandal and the courts had made an inquiry over the matter from the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka Police will continue to trace related websites while investigations continue, said the Police HQ statement. The Attorney General has appointed an Additional Solicitor General and several State Counsel to lead with the prosecution of the suspects. Among the other suspects is a captain of a ship and several crew, a Lt. Commander of the Sri Lanka navy who is also a leading cardiologist., the Deputy Chairman of the Mihinthale Pradeshiya Sabha, a Gem Businessman from Balangoda, a Millionaire Businessman from Kalutara, administrators and operators of several websites. Maldives’ former state minister for finance and treasury is also among the suspects.
