Over 4,500 acres of forest destroyed in Galolayaya with political backing: SYU

The Socialist Youth Union (SYU) today presented the statistics of allegedly deforested areas under the present government, including 4,562 acres of forest in Galolayaya. Committee member Sanjaya Wishwanath today stated that a mass destruction of forests and wetlands had taken place with the present government’s blessing and with the help of close friends of the government. He stated that two acres of Ramsar wetland in Anawilundawa, 10 acres in Wanathawilluwa and 4,562 in Galolayaya were destroyed. “Further, 1,500 acres of forest was destroyed by a friend of a politician in Wilpattu under the guise of cultivating aloe vera. Another 150 acres of forest was destroyed by Minister S.M. Chandrasena in Ratmale Dahaiyagala,” Wishwanath said. He also pointed out that several areas in Dahaiyagala, Ratmale were deforested yesterday night as well. “A further 700 acres in Muthurajawala, 20 acres in Rajapeella, eight acres in Elephant Pass, 10 acres in Yakkure, 21 acres in Karuwalagaswewa and 10 acres in Thanamalwila Kodagoda has been destroyed by the present government,” he concluded.
