Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga says that a special programme has been launched to promote 6,059 newly identified tourist destinations among local and foreign tourists. Minister Ranatunga said that these new tourist destinations are eco-friendly and that he hopes to develop them in coordination with institutions such as Wildlife, Forest Conservation and Archeology. Addressing a discussion on the Samurdhi Development Committee in the Nuwara Eliya District held at the District Secretariat yesterday, he said 318 new tourist attractions have been identified in the Nuwara Eliya District alone. “A tourist zone centered on Nuwara Eliya will be declared in the future. It is expected to establish three Community Tourist Villages in the vicinity of Nuwara Eliya, Liyanwela and Laxapana villages. Attention is also being paid to declare an eco-friendly tourism zone in the vicinity of the Haggala Botanical Gardens," the Minister said. State Ministers S. Viyalendran, Dilum Amunugama and all District Secretaries were also present at the meeting.
