Over 90,000 tabs for national and provincial schools

24 Sep 2020

By Sarah Hannan The pilot project to provide electronic tabs for students, which was approved during the Yahapalana Government, is to continue with the Ministry of Education deciding to supply tabs to national and provincial council-managed schools in the coming weeks. Secretary to the Ministry of Education Prof. Kapila Perera, speaking to The Morning, stated: “The Majority of the tabs will be distributed among the students and then to teachers based on their requirements. Apart from that, 1,500 tabs will be allocated to the Department of Examinations to maintain the government examination result sheets.” Prof. Perera noted that following the former government tender, the supplier was able to provide a total of 96,919 tabs at a cost of Rs. 3,009 million. A cabinet paper has been drafted to approve the budgetary allocations to pay the relevant supplier and release the stocks. It was in 2017 that then Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam presented the proposal to the Cabinet to provide tabs for schoolchildren in the Advanced Level (A/L) classes. At the time, former President Maithripala Sirisena was of the view that the pilot project should only be limited to national schools, and was not suitable to be launched islandwide in all schools. Based on the success of the pilot project, the Ministry of Education was advised to proceed to the next phase of the project in providing tabs to all schools. The then Government was to allocate Rs. 5 billion towards purchasing tabs and the balance monies were to be used to purchase desks and chairs, which are a major deficiency in schools.
