Dialog Knockout Presidents Cup Tournament kicks off tomorrow    After the successful completion of the Dialog Schools Rugby League, the stage is set for the Dialog Knockout President Cup Tournament which is scheduled to kick off this weekend. Eight teams will vie for the coveted President’s Trophy which is currently at the hands of St. Peter’s College. The Peterites won the Milo President’s Trophy Knockout Tournament when it was last held in 2019, beating Wesley College 18-15. However, the Peterites will not get a chance to defend their title since they are under investigation for fielding an ineligible player during the recently concluded Dialog Rugby League.    Dharmaraja will take their place in the quarterfinals and they will be facing League Champions Isipathana College in the quarterfinals.    This weekend’s fixtures   Saturday (27)  Dharmaraja College vs. Isipathana College at Royal Complex  Vidyartha College vs. S. Thomas’ College at Havelocks   Sunday (28)  St. Joseph’s College vs. St. Anthony’s College at Royal Complex Wesley College vs. Science College at Havelocks    (All matches will kick off at 4.15 p.m.)   Munchi National Volleyball Championship finals on Sunday    The women’s and men’s finals of the Munchi Super League Volleyball Tournament organised under the guidance of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and Ceylon Biscuits Ltd. are scheduled to be held on Sunday (28) at the National Youth Service Council Indoor Stadium.   The women’s final will take place at 1 p.m. as Sri Lanka Army compete against Sri Lanka Air Force. The most attention-grabbing match of the day is the Super League Men’s final which is set to start at 3 p.m, where the Sri Lanka Air Force will battle the Ceylon Electricity Board.   Accordingly, it is a unique instance that Sri Lanka Air Force teams are together for both the women’s and men’s finals of this tournament. Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Roshan Ranasinghe and National Sports Council President Arjuna Ranatunga will be present for the finals which will be attended by Dr. Secretary of the Sports Ministry Amal Harsha de Silva and Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation President Kanchana Jayaratne.   Bhuvaneka and Sachin fall short at Badminton World Championship   Sri Lanka’s Bhuvaneka Gunathilaka and Sachin Dias, who participated in the preliminary round of the men’s doubles event in the World Badminton Championship held in Japan, lost 2-1 to Denmark’s Jappy Bey and Lasse Mohed.   Although Denmark took the lead by winning the first round of the match with 21-11 points, Sri Lanka was able to crawl back by winning the second round with 21-18 points.    However, Denmark secured the victory by winning the third round with 25-23.   SL U19 script a memorable win against England U19 at Chelmsford    Trinity College player Ranuda Somarathne’s unbeaten century helped Sri Lanka U19 register a three-wicket win over England U19 in the first Youth Test at County Ground, Chelmsford.   England U19 resumed their second innings on Day Four at 199 for three with a 179-run lead. They were quite aggressive in the second innings, but the visitors managed to peg them back with some good bowling on the last day. The hosts failed to capitalise on the good start given by their top order as they lost the last seven wickets for just 93 runs.    Former St. Peter’s College Skipper Wanuja Sahan was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka, claiming four wickets for 89 runs while Duvindu Ranatunga chipped in with three for 34 runs.   Chasing 273 runs to win in 59 overs, Sri Lanka got off to a horrible start losing the top four batters for just 48 runs. First innings centurion Asitha Wanninayake also failed to contribute as the hosts dominated proceedings.    However, number 5 batter Ranuda Somarathne and Skipper Raveen de Silva then consolidated the Sri Lankan innings, putting on a 50-run stand for the fifth wicket.   Once Skipper de Silva was dismissed, Peterite wicketkeeper-batter Lahiru Dawatage joined Somarathne and built a match-changing partnership of 89 runs off 80 balls for the sixth wicket. Dawatage added the impetus to the innings needed with a run-a-ball 49 with 8 fours. Unfortunately, Dawatage missed out on a half-century but Somarathne held his nerve.    He found good support from Vinuja Ranpul and Wanuja Sahan who hung around and got the visitors over the line. Somarathne remained unbeaten at 120 runs off 115 balls with 12 fours and a six. With this win, Sri Lanka U19 now lead the two-match Youth Test series 1-0, with the second game scheduled to be played from 28 to 31 August at Derby.
