The Government is to buy paddy at the gazetted price of Rs. 50 per kilogramme, The Morning learnt.
Government Spokesman and Minister of Mass Media Keheliya Rambukwella confirmed this move to The Morning.
“We will be buying paddy from the next harvest at Rs. 50, which was gazetted recently. We want to protect the farmers and this will help the Government to do this,” the Government Spokesman said.
He said that on the side, this would also ensure a safe retail price for consumers.
“We will then sell at Rs. 90 a kilogramme to the consumer. This will safeguard the consumer as well. Of course, in the private sector, we’ll see competition and so the price there could be a few rupees higher.”
