CID to record statement from the President

14 Oct 2018

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is to record a statement from President Maithripala Sirisena on the alleged assassination plot revealed by Namal Kumara of the Anti-Corruption Force. Kumara made several public revelations of an alleged plot to assassinate the President, and several opposition VIPs, as well create unrest among multi-ethnic communities in the country, which were allegedly masterminded by former head of the Terrorism Investigations Division (TID) DIG Nalaka de Silva. The CID has now commenced a probe into Namal Kumara, following a complaint lodged by the Presidential Secretariat, following claims that he was affiliated to a task force set up by the Secretariat to combat the drug menace. Therefore, a statement is to be recorded from the President on the matter. When contacted by The Sunday Morning, police sources confirmed that a statement would be recorded from the President, but said a date is yet to be fixed for the purpose. The CID on Friday (12) also recorded a statement from former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa following a complaint lodged by him over the alleged assassination plot. Meanwhile, the Fort Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday (9) received the report prepared by the Government Analyst’s Department on the voice recordings referring to the assassination plot. The Sunday Morning last week reported that the Government Analyst has found the voice in the recording to be that of DIG de Silva. However, the Government Analyst is faced with an obstacle in continuing with the tests on the rest of the mobile phone recordings since the Department does not possess the required technology to retrieve the data. The Sunday Morning learns that the investigators are now looking at seeking foreign assistance to retrieve the data and continue with the investigations on the voice recordings. As for the sniper rifle that was confiscated by the TID during a raid in Trincomalee in June this year, remains missing. The CID, it is learnt, is still continuing with the hunt to locate the missing sniper rifle since the missing weapon poses a threat given the alleged assassination plot. (MIA)
