CID concludes probe into Noyahr assault

Investigations carried out by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) into the attack on journalist Keith Noyahr have concluded, sources said. When contacted by The Sunday Morning, sources at the CID confirmed that the investigation that was carried out into the attack on the journalist concluded and the report was sent to the Attorney General’s Department for indictment. The CID recorded statements from many military personnel as well as former Army Commander Field Marshal Minister Sarath Fonseka and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The then Associate Editor of The Nation Keith Noyahr was abducted in 2008 while he was returning home from work. He was later assaulted and released after which he fled the country with his family. Former military intelligence head Major General (Retired) Amal Karunasekara was among those arrested over the incident but he was later granted bail. On 8 July, 2008, the then Chief Opposition Whip UNP MP Joseph Michael Perera made a special statement in Parliament in which he claimed the abduction was carried out by a special team operating under the then Army Commander Sarath Fonseka.
