Minority parties still undecided

11 Aug 2019

By Tharumalee Silva Minority parties are yet to decide if they will join the United National Party (UNP)-led alliance and a final decision will be taken only after the UNP picks its presidential candidate. The Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA), the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), and the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) said that they have not yet reached a final decision on joining the new alliance. Speaking to The Sunday Morning, Minister of Hill Country New Villages, Infrastructure, and Community Development, Leader of the National Union of Workers, and member of the TPA Palani Digambaran said that his party will not be signing an agreement until the UNP confirms who their presidential candidate for the 2019 presidential elections would be. SLMC member Muhammad Ibrahim Muhammad Mansoor stated that the SLMC will also not be joining the alliance led by the UNP until a presidential candidate was announced. ACMC member Abdullah Mahroof said that the ACMC had also not reached a final decision for the same reasons. He said that they expect the UNP to reach a final decision by the end of this month following which the ACMC would announce its stand.
