No mention of assassination plot in recovered data

07 Jan 2019

There is no mention of a plot to kill President Maithripala Sirisena or former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the data recovered off the phone of activist Namal Kumara, Defence sources said. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) recovered deleted conversations from the mobile phone of Kumara. The CID informed court recently about the deleted conversations and submitted a report. The Sunday Morning learnt that the recovered telephone conversations did not have anything related to a plot to kill the President or Rajapaksa. A special team from the CID visited Hong Kong recently as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged plot to kill President Maithripala Sirisena. The authorities in Hong Kong managed to recover the voice recordings related to the case, deleted from the mobile telephone of Kumara. Kumara earlier revealed details of the plot to kill the President following a telephone conversation he had with former Terrorist Investigations Department (TID) DIG Nalaka de Silva.
