Powwow continues on new Cabinet

16 Dec 2018

By Easwaran Rutnam Last-minute discussions continued yesterday and further talks are expected today on the new Cabinet to be appointed with United National Front (UNF) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister. Wickremesinghe is scheduled to take oaths this morning in the presence of President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat. United National Party (UNP) Chairman Kabir Hashim told The Sunday Morning that a few UNP seniors hoped to attend the swearing-in of Wickremesinghe, which would be a fairly low-key event. After Wickremesinghe takes oaths, the new Cabinet is expected to be appointed tomorrow (Monday) or on Tuesday. UNP Assistant Leader Ravi Karunanayake said that talks were held yesterday on the new Cabinet and more talks were scheduled for today to finalise the composition of the Cabinet. Asked if any Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) member was expected to be included in the Cabinet, Karunanayake said that the decision would be taken today. Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Leader Rauff Hakeem told The Sunday Morning that the new Cabinet was expected to be finalised after Wickremesinghe took oaths and held talks with the President. The SLMC is part of the UNF but Hakeem said that they have not had any discussion yet with Wickremesinghe on the Cabinet posts to be given to the SLMC. Meanwhile, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said that the new Cabinet would be a UNF Cabinet and not another unity government. He told reporters at Temple Trees yesterday that the UNF would be open to accept other political parties to join the alliance on certain conditions, but it would go as a UNF Government. “We will see on what basis others want to join us and we will have conditions set for them to be in the Government,” he said. Kariyawasam also said that the new Cabinet was expected to be limited to 30 ministers. However, he added that if there was a need to expand it, then Parliament approval would be sought to do so. He confirmed that the Cabinet would be finalised today (Sunday) after Wickremesinghe took oaths while the swearing-in would likely be either tomorrow on Tuesday.
