The Fall Armyworm is detected in Nuwara Eliya for the first time.
Locally known as the ‘Sena caterpillar’, the worm was detected in Ruwanpura in Nuwara Eliya.
Officials said that the Fall Armyworm had started to destroy crops in the area and attempts were now being made to contain it from spreading.
Corn transported as animal feed to Hatton and Nuwara Eliya from other parts of the country is believed to have led to the Sena caterpillar being brought to the area unknown.
There are fears the caterpillar will go on to destroy vegetables and tea which is grown in estates in the area.
