Death toll rises after freak weather

By Tharumalee Silva The death toll due to the freak weather experienced in several parts of the country rose to eight persons Saturday (20). The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said that 5,000 individuals had been affected by the floods, and strong wind in Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura left a total of 300 people displaced while 300 others had been affected by the landslide in Ginigathhena. Speaking to The Sunday Morning, DMC Media Spokesperson Pradeep Kodippili said the DMC provided food rations to the 300 people displaced while small shops and other properties will be compensated according to the damage that was incurred. He further stated that the maximum limit of the compensation for each individual is Rs. 12.5 million. Meanwhile, the duty officer at the Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology told The Sunday Morning that there will be a significant decrease in rainfall this week. However, he informed that showers are still expected in the Galle and Matara Districts and in the Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces. He further stated that the drought will continue, especially in the northeastern provinces.
