Rassies van der Dussen scored an unbeaten 123 in 134 balls for South Africa who were struggling at 55/4 in the 15th over carrying them to a competitive total while sharing 116 runs for the fifth wicket with David Miller, who made 56-ball 50.
Pakistan reply centred round Captain Babar Azam's century (103 in 104). Their opener Imam-ul-Haq struck 70 runs.
The second ODI of the series will be held on Sunday (4).
