Pakistan Prime Minister: Imran Khan to visit SL on 23 Feb

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to Sri Lanka has been confirmed and is scheduled to take place on 23 February, making it the first visit to be undertaken by a head of state to the country since the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic last year. Foreign Secretary Admiral Prof. Jayanath Colombage told The Sunday Morning that the visit has now been confirmed for 23 February. Premier Khan is expected to arrive and stay in the country for one or two days under a biosafety bubble. The main focus of the visit is to enhance bilateral relations, it is learnt. Prof. Colombage said the two nations have maintained high-level bilateral relations and noted that Pakistan has been a great friend to Sri Lanka by supporting the country during most difficult times. “We would wish to see bilateral relations, especially concerning trade, grow between the two countries. This will be a significant visit,” he said. When queried about the specifics of the visit, Prof. Colombage said that Premier Khan would likely spend a day or two in Sri Lanka and meet President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Khan’s counterpart, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. “Since we have this biosafety bubble, you can't spend a lot of time, and therefore the activities will be limited to just high-level meetings. The plan is for him to meet both the President and the Prime Minister,” he said. Even amidst the Covid-19 pandemic situation, the country has hosted the visits of key foreign delegations, the Foreign Secretary said. “We had former US State Secretary Mike Pompeo, a top-level Chinese delegation, and Indian Minister of External Affairs Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar visit the country,” he noted. Meanwhile, the Pakistan High Commission in Colombo said that everything is being planned at the moment for the visit of Premier Khan, adding that further details will be available in the near future.
