Pakistan-SL biz forum during Imran’s visit

16 Feb 2021

A one-day business forum is scheduled to be held in Colombo with the participation of a top-level delegation from Pakistan during Pakistani Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan’s visit to Sri Lanka, The Morning learnt. Speaking to The Morning, sources at the High Commission of Pakistan in Sri Lanka said that the business forum, most likely to be held towards the end of this month, would host both Pakistani and Sri Lankan business community members. However, High Commission sources refused to comment on whether Pakistani PM Imran Khan is due to attend the event. Last month, Foreign Ministry Secretary Prof. Jayanath Colombage told The Sunday Morning that PM Khan is due to visit Sri Lanka on 23 February − the first head of state scheduled to visit the country since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic last year. According to sources at the High Commission, the aim of the aforementioned forum is to enhance and improve bilateral trade relations between the two countries. Special focus would be given to the construction, pharmaceuticals, cotton, and gems and jewellery sectors. Tamil Progressive Alliance Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) Mano Ganesan had stated earlier this month that the Speaker of the House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena had informed the party leaders that PM Khan would be addressing the Sri Lankan Parliament. PM Khan’s visit coincides with the upcoming United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session to be held in Geneva from 22 February onwards, where a resolution on Sri Lanka will be moved by the Core Group on Sri Lanka.
