Parliament briefly suspended due to Opposition protest

25 Feb 2022

Parliamentary proceedings were suspended for 10 minutes yesterday (24), following a protest staged by the members of the Opposition. A heated debate ensued after Minister Dinesh Gunawardena alleged that an Opposition member of parliament (MP) had brought an unauthorised item into the chamber. Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Harin Fernando then clarified that the Leader of the House was referring to three torches being found inside his bag when he was inspected by the security officials at the parliamentary entrance. Fernando claimed he wanted to carry a torch with him in case of a power interruption during Parliamentary proceedings. Later, the parliamentarians of the SJB staged a protest carrying torches, while taking issue with the ongoing power crisis.
