Parliament should always act in accordance with Standing Orders: Speaker responds to yesterday's incident

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena stated in Parliament today (09) that the Parliament should always act in accordance with Standing Orders. The Minister was commenting on the incident where heated debates on Ranjan Ramanayake's seat took place in Parliament yesterday (08). The Leader of the House, Minister Dinesh Gunawardena also stated that as a senior member of parliament, he and other members of the Opposition were more patient when they were in the Opposition. The Leader of the House said that the House would not be in such a situation if everyone acted in accordance with Standing Orders and that it should act in accordance with parliamentary tradition. On Monday (05), the Speaker, the Government and the Opposition all responded to 50 questions and maintained good discipline in Parliament, the Minister said, adding that this quality should be further enhanced. Commenting on this, the Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardene said that he regrets the incidents that took place in Parliament yesterday. The Minister said that both the Opposition and the government party were behaving in a manner that was detrimental to the dignity of the Parliament. The Minister said that in the past there was no room for accusations against each other in Parliament and stressed that Standing Orders should be strictly enforced to prevent such acts of disrespect from each other at a time when the supreme body of Parliament should be an example to the whole country.
